How to Choose the Right Newborn Photographer in Edmonton: 10 Questions Every Parent Should Ask
Bringing home your baby is one of life's biggest milestones, and choosing the right newborn photographer is about so much more than finding someone whose photos you like. If you're searching for information on how to choose the right newborn photographer in Edmonton, you've probably already realized that every photographer offers something a little different. You're trusting someone with your tiny newborn during those first precious days, and you deserve to feel completely confident in your choice. Here are ten questions I encourage every family to ask before booking.

1. Do you primarily photograph Newborns?
While many photographers offer newborn sessions alongside weddings, events, or occasional family portraits, it's worth asking how often they actually photograph newborns. Those first few weeks of life are unlike any other stage, and photographing them requires a unique combination of patience, experience, and an understanding of newborn behaviour.
Although I also photograph maternity, family, milestone, and branding sessions throughout the year, newborn photography has always been at the heart of my business and makes up the majority of the sessions I photograph. Working with babies is something I genuinely love, and over the years I've developed a calm, baby-led approach that allows each session to unfold naturally, without ever rushing or expecting babies to fit a schedule.
During the first couple of weeks of life, babies are incredibly delicate. Sessions move slowly, allowing plenty of time for feeding, changing, cuddling, and settling whenever needed. Rather than focusing on achieving a long list of poses, an experienced newborn photographer knows how to read a baby's cues, adapt throughout the session, and create beautiful images while always prioritizing their comfort and safety.
As you browse photographers, take time to look through complete galleries rather than just a handful of favourite images on social media. Consistency is important. You want to feel confident that the beautiful photographs you see represent the experience and gallery you can expect for your own family.
2. What style of photography do you love?
Every photographer has their own artistic style, and choosing one whose work genuinely resonates with you is one of the most important parts of the decision.
Some photographers create colourful, heavily styled images using elaborate props and themed setups. Others focus on simple, timeless portraits that highlight your baby's tiny features and your family's connection.
Neither approach is right or wrong, but it's worth asking yourself which style you'll still love years from now. Trends come and go, while natural, classic portraits often feel just as meaningful decades later.
As you're browsing portfolios, pay attention to editing as well. Are skin tones consistent? Do colours feel natural? Can you imagine these photographs displayed in your home ten or twenty years from now?

3. How does the photographer prioritize safety?
Nothing is more important than your baby's safety.
An experienced newborn photographer understands that beautiful photographs should never come at the expense of your baby's comfort or wellbeing. Every pose should be approached gently, and many of the more advanced newborn poses you see online are actually created as composites, with a parent spotting the baby throughout the process. Don't be afraid to ask questions. A professional photographer should happily explain how they keep babies comfortable during the session, how they support newborns while posing, and how they adapt if a baby isn't comfortable with a particular pose. A good photographer never works against a baby's cues. If your little one wants to stretch, feed, stay awake, or simply be held for a while, the session should adjust accordingly.
4. What's included in the experience?
The photographs are only part of what you're investing in.
Think about how you'd like the experience to feel from the moment you inquire until your images are delivered.
Will you receive guidance on what to wear? Are wraps, blankets, and baby outfits provided? Is there a client wardrobe available for mothers? Will someone help pose your family naturally, or are you expected to figure everything out yourself?
These details might seem small now, but when you're caring for a newborn and adjusting to life with a new baby, having someone guide you through every step makes an enormous difference. The best photography experience leaves you feeling cared for - not overwhelmed.
5. Does the photographer have consistent work?
Anyone can post their very best photographs online. The real question is whether they consistently produce beautiful galleries for every family they photograph. Look beyond the highlights on social media. Ask to see full galleries if they're available. Notice whether lighting, editing, posing, and quality remain consistent from one session to the next.
Reading reviews can also tell you a great deal. Parents often talk about how they felt during their session just as much as they talk about the photographs themselves. Did they feel welcomed? Was the photographer patient? Did the experience exceed their expectations?
Beautiful images matter, but consistency builds trust.

6. Is the studio convenient?
During those first few weeks with a newborn, even leaving the house can feel like a big adventure. Between packing diapers, extra clothes, bottles, blankets, and everything else your little one might need, it's completely understandable if you're wondering whether a studio or in-home session is the better choice.
My private home studio is located in Beaumont, just minutes from southeast Edmonton, making it an easy drive for families coming from Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Leduc, Devon, St. Albert, and the surrounding area.
The space was thoughtfully designed for newborn photography, with everything prepared before you arrive, including wraps, baby outfits, blankets, and a curated wardrobe for mothers. There's no need to bring anything beyond the essentials for your baby, allowing you to simply settle in and enjoy the experience.
For some families, however, there's nothing more meaningful than documenting this chapter exactly where it began - at home. In-home newborn sessions allow us to capture your baby in the nursery you've lovingly prepared, the chair where countless late-night feeds have already taken place, and the quiet moments that make your house uniquely yours. They often feel a little more documentary in nature, preserving not only your baby's tiny features but also the environment that you'll one day look back on with so much nostalgia.
If you're recovering from birth, have older children who are more comfortable in familiar surroundings, or simply love the idea of telling your family's story within your own home, an in-home session can be a beautiful choice. Together, we'll decide which experience feels like the best fit for your family, ensuring your photographs reflect this season in the most authentic way possible.
7. Can parents and siblings be included?
Your newborn photographs aren't only about your baby.
They're about this chapter of your family's story.
Tiny fingers wrapped around Dad's hand. The way an older sibling proudly looks at their new baby brother or sister. The quiet moments between a new mother and her baby.
These are often the photographs families treasure most.
Choose a photographer who welcomes parents and siblings into the session and knows how to gently guide everyone into natural, connected images without making anything feel stiff or overly posed.
8. What happens if my baby cries?
This is one of the biggest worries parents have, especially if it's their first baby.
The truth is... almost every baby cries at some point during their newborn session.
They get hungry. They need cuddles. They need a diaper change. Sometimes they simply want to stretch, be held, or take a few minutes to settle before they're ready to continue. All of this is completely normal, and it's never something you need to apologize for.
An experienced newborn photographer expects these moments and builds plenty of extra time into every session. Rather than rushing through a checklist of poses, I let your baby set the pace.
Sometimes the solution is as simple as wrapping your baby a little more snugly, gently swaying and bouncing them until they drift into a deeper sleep, or waiting a few extra minutes before transitioning into the next pose. Other times, your baby simply needs to be back in Mom's arms for a feed or a cuddle before they're ready to settle again. We'll always follow their cues.
Over the years, I've learned that patience is often the most important part of newborn photography. There's no pressure to "perform," and no expectation that your baby will sleep through the entire session. If they need breaks, we take them. If they need feeding, we pause. If they decide they're happiest awake for a little while, we'll capture those bright-eyed moments too.
Some babies sleep peacefully from beginning to end, while others spend much of their session stretching, yawning, making funny little expressions, or quietly looking around the room. Those awake moments often become some of my favourite images because they capture your baby's personality exactly as they were during those first precious days.
My goal isn't to create a perfectly posed baby at all costs. My goal is to create a calm, enjoyable experience where both you and your baby feel comfortable, cared for, and never rushed. The beautiful photographs naturally follow from there.

9. Do you feel comfortable with them?
This is one question that often gets overlooked.
You'll likely spend two to three hours with your photographer during one of the biggest transitions of your life.
Do they make you feel welcomed?
Do they communicate clearly?
Do they seem patient?
Do they genuinely enjoy working with newborns?
Technical skill is important, but so is personality. Feeling relaxed allows you to enjoy the experience, and that comfort naturally shows in your photographs.
10. Can you picture these photographs in your home?
Before making your decision, imagine looking at these photographs years from now.
Do they still feel beautiful?
Do they reflect your family's personality?
Can you imagine them framed on your walls, passed down to your children, or shared with future generations?
The best newborn photographs aren't beautiful because they're technically perfect. They're meaningful because they remind you exactly how this season of life felt.
Choosing the Right Photographer for Your Family
There are many wonderful newborn photographers serving Edmonton and the surrounding communities, and every family will have different priorities.
My advice is to look beyond the portfolio. Choose someone whose style you genuinely love, whose experience gives you confidence, and whose approach makes you feel comfortable from your very first conversation.
My own approach is centred around creating a calm, baby-led experience where parents can slow down and simply enjoy these first precious days. Sessions take place in my private Beaumont studio, just minutes from southeast Edmonton, with everything thoughtfully prepared before you arrive - from wraps and baby outfits to a curated wardrobe for mothers.
If you're looking for timeless newborn photography and an experience that feels just as meaningful as the photographs themselves, I'd love to welcome your family.
