What Age Is Best for Newborn Photos?

What Age Is Best for Newborn Photos?

One of the most common questions I receive from expecting parents is:

"What age is best for newborn photos?"

The answer depends a little on the type of images you're hoping for, but in most cases, the ideal time for newborn photos is within the first two weeks after your baby is born.

That said, if your baby is already older than that, don't panic. Beautiful newborn photographs can be created at many different ages, and it's rarely "too late."

What Age Is Best for Newborn Photos?

For families hoping for those sleepy, curled-up newborn images, the best age for newborn photos is typically between 5 and 14 days old.

During this stage, many babies:

  • Sleep more deeply

  • Are comfortable being gently swaddled

  • Naturally curl into positions similar to those they were in before birth

  • Tend to settle more easily throughout the session

This is often why photographers recommend scheduling newborn sessions during the first two weeks.

Is It Too Late After Two Weeks?

Not at all.

In fact, some parents intentionally choose to wait a little longer.

Babies photographed between 2 and 6 weeks old may spend more time awake during their session, but that can result in beautiful images filled with eye contact, expressions, and personality.

At this stage, sessions often focus more on connection and family interactions than perfectly sleepy poses.

What About Premature Babies?

Premature babies are a little different.

Rather than focusing on their birth date, it's often more helpful to consider their adjusted age and overall development.

Many preemies are photographed closer to their due date, when they're a little stronger and have had time to settle into life at home, and they have had a bit of time to grow so they are not as chilly as easy to wake throughout the session!

Every baby is unique, which is why I always encourage parents to reach out so we can decide what timing makes the most sense for their family.

What If My Baby Is Already a Month Old?

You have not missed your opportunity.

Some of the sweetest images happen when babies are 4, 6, or even 8 weeks old.

At this age, babies are often:

  • More alert

  • Beginning to make eye contact

  • Stretching and interacting more with their surroundings

The images may look a little different than those created with a sleepy one-week-old newborn and the session might be slightly longer, but the images you'll receive can be every bit as meaningful.

Should I Book Before My Baby Is Born?

Yes.

Even though the session itself takes place after your baby arrives, I recommend booking during your second trimester whenever possible.

When you reserve your newborn session in advance, I keep space available around your due date and adjust once your baby arrives.

This helps ensure availability while giving flexibility for babies who decide to arrive early or late.

What Happens If My Baby Won't Sleep?

This is one of the biggest worries parents have before their session.

The good news is that newborn sessions are completely baby-led.

While many babies sleep for portions of their session, others prefer to stay awake and take everything in. Those bright eyes, tiny expressions, and curious looks can create some of the most memorable photographs in your gallery. There is never pressure for your baby to perform a certain way - our main focus will be making sure they are comfortable.

Newborn Photos at Every Age

One of the things I've learned over the years is that every baby brings something different to their session.

A sleepy 10-day-old newborn.

A wide-eyed 4-week-old baby.

A smiling 8-week-old little one.

Each stage has its own kind of beauty.

The most important thing isn't choosing the perfect age. It's making sure these early days don't pass by undocumented while you're waiting for the "right" time.
